"You and I are here as a direct result of this Cosmic Spiritual Impulse of Law. You may call it God if you will, although I question whether the idea of a God is even logical. It has been accepted, however by many; so we will here call this Great Impulse GOD. You exist by and through the existence of this God-Law; consequently, you are a part of the original and only existing thinking Spiritual God-Impulse."
The main technique used in the Psychiana teachings was to find yourself a quiet place; someplace you can be yourself; be quiet and repeat various affirmations. A lesson would start out asking you ". . . to be quiet, for everything is found in quiet - try to think of nothing - don't force yourself to unnaturalness - sink into yourself." Next, repeat as many times as possible "I Believe in the All Powerful God". He would then recommend repeating it throughout the day. The point he makes is that repeating something actually makes physical changes in the brain (dendrites?) and would lead to a new frame of mind. At the same time, he promised no quick returns, and realized that you have to earn your rewards.
Frank researched and studied psychology and religion; and kept abreast of all the latest 'atomic' theories, or whatever was new or fit his views. He made many correlations between his teaching and what was going on in the world on many fronts at that time.
"The Spirit of God - the Father of us all - lives in us all with unlimited Power. That Power is available to all because it is the Power of God. Entrance into the so-called Kingdom of God is not dependent upon what one may believe. It is dependent solely on one's recognition of the indwelling Power of God. Once this Power is grasped and understood, each and all may use this great indwelling spirit of God for the manifestation here and now of everything good we can possibly need. Followed to its logical conclusion, this means a complete union of God with man is not only possible, but inescapable when the nations of this earth understand the Fatherhood of God, and the indwelling of The Spirit of God in all men, here and now."
His main teachings related to a God which he called 'an invisible life force' which was everything and everywhere. God was a Law of the Universe. This teaching was similar to Joseph Campbell talking about the immense change in your outlook when you start viewing everything of the world as 'thou' instead of 'it'.
"A fish swimming in the Pacific ocean is perfectly oblivious of the water in which it swims. You and I are perhaps quite oblivious to the Power surrounding us, but the Power is there enveloping and enshrouding you just the same whether you are conscious of it or not."
"In other words, bring to men and women the true concept of God - tell them they possess the very same Power Jesus possessed, and tell them too, that if they manifest the same faith He manifested, they can do the same things; then see how little time it will take to clear this civilization of wars, crimes, and everything else the human race does not want. But hold Jesus high above the heads of the rest of us, tell us He was God and therefore we cannot duplicate His faith and His works, and you have knocked out from under us the only strong foundation we can build upon."
"For somehow or other, I cannot conceive of the Power of the Great Spirit - God - being manifested on this earth and not being able to do away with war, crime, and the other undesirable things heretofore mentioned in this book."
"Try to dwell upon the amazing and stupendous fact that the Spirit of All-Existence and the Spirit of Eternal Existence, if you please, is you as your real self."
". . . common sense dictates that in the scheme of creation covering such a vast period of time and being so very intricate; that system and scheme of things must contain the very Spirit that created it."
"Try as he may, the author cannot get away from the Fatherhood of god and the Brotherhood of man. All men, Russians, Japanese Jews, gentiles, black, white and what have you. Man is one as God is one."
"Religion is an evolution - NOT a theory. It is a life - not a religious tradition that never changes."
"If there were no fear nor doubt in the world, there would be no battleships, or submarines . . . I would like to ask every student of mine from now on to adopt a perfectly fearless attitude; no matter under what circumstances, please adopt this attitude of absolute fearlessness. . .Sin is Doubt."
He quotes Lao-Tse, "There is a something undifferentiated, yet perfect, which existed before heaven and earth ever came into being. I know not its name and if I must designate it I must call it Tao. The outstanding characteristics of this Tao is that it does everything without giving any sign of doing anything. It is a great inchoate, incorporeal, intangible 'something' that never extends itself, and never gets excited. It simply is."
"If you are looking for some unusual demonstration from the Realm of God without any effort on your part and without any earnest desire, then, I say to you that you might just as well stop your studies here and now for no miracle manifestation will ever be given to you."
"In other words, the ultimate conception of God to a human being, is that conception that will not try to conceive - but will just KNOW that moment by moment I am under the protecting care and endless love of the great God-Spirit. I need nothing more than that. Death has no fears then, for there can be no death with God. There will be a change all right, but no death."
"If I study and experiment and live for the next million years, and if I progress every day just a little bit, then, even at that, I shall never be able to comprehend fully the beauties of this marvelous realm of the Great Life Spirit."
Douglas Adams couldn't have said it better: "Just what is this God-Idea anyhow?"
"There is a place down deep within the soul - at least, I find it so - where you can touch this power. And you know you have touched it. You can call it a feeling or whatever you wish. It is a ___."
"Rapport?" Bach asks.
"No," Frank replies, "I don't like rapport. It smacks too much of spiritualism. There's nothing spiritualistic about this. I'd rather call it a fusion or a blending - a synthesis - that's it a synthesis of one's whole being with Being. I teach that life is actually God. The life force moving in your body is actually the God force."
Frank disturbed alot of people with these ideas. He could have given them what they wanted, but he even expressed his hesitation about telling his students what he really thought.
"The question of what has happened to those who have gone beyond (death) is a question on which no evidence of any kind can be thrown. We may surmise from now until the crack of doom, and still surmises mean nothing; as far as actual evidence goes regarding this future life, there is none . . . probably ninety per cent of people living are afraid of death . . . Each scientist who gives his life time in the electrical realm as did Thomas A. Edison, is doing his little part toward bringing to us a little of the secret of life which must be the secret of God. The chemist who works over his crucibles and the physicist, all are doing their little part to bring to us an understanding of life which is God."
". . . it is worth while noticing that this living forever, or Eternal Life, is unquestionably the object of all religions. . . Is this Life Principle being allowed to run wild or is it just simply not being understood? Both suppositions are true."
"The question of Life after Death seems to be one about which I receive more letters than any other . . I can truthfully say that without any belief in Immortality, death has lost all its terrors for me. If I felt that I were to wake up in a new and strange environment, concerning which I had not the slightest knowledge, I might have some misgivings and dread this new experience, but feeling as I do that after death it may be the same with me as before birth, there is absolutely nothing to fear, and yet in the background of it all, there lurks the lingering desire for this thing called Immortality, although why it lurks there, I confess I do not know."
"Kindly remember here that in the Realm of this Infinite Spirit, there is no such thing as time, nor is there such a thing as space; there is nothing but this great, invisible Life Spirit which we call God, permeating the entire atmosphere and permeating all space outside the atmosphere. The vision of man is limited."
"Immortality is possible here and now . . ."
Frank's personal scapbooks contain clippings from the papers about anything new in science. He liked to add these discoveries to his teachings. One example was 'cosmic rays'. Assuming he is talking about neutrinos, he used it as an example to say that this electrical energy existing through space could be responsible for creation.
". . . every scientific fact I can glean is welcomed. If it coincides with my ideas of God, well and good. If it does not, then I shall change my ideas of God. For scientific truths are, I repeat, always from god. Quite to the contrary of the opinions of those who say science disproves God. I find that science absolutely proves the existence of God."
"I have no difficulty in imagining an Intelligent Law. No difficulty whatsoever."
"What I want my students to do from now on, is not to send their desires and petitions out in the sky to 'an unknown god', but to realize the fact first, that a thought is a THING - a real thing. If I were to go into the neuron theory I could show you that a thought, passing through the head, makes a distinct impression through these neurons, of which there are billions in the human system. A continued and oft repeated thought creates for itself a channel which is more or less permanent, and if this be a fact, and it is a fact, then do you not see that in constantly repeating a certain affirmation, you are CAUSING THAT THOUGHT OR AFFIRMATION TO BECOME A VERY PART OF YOU?"
"Channing says, 'Every man was made for growth and for knowledge; and its nature is sinned against when it is doomed to ignorance'. No mind is doomed to ignorance except as it be closed by fear against the penetrating influence of the Great God-Law, for fear always springs from ignorance, and ignorance is always the result of fear and can only be overcome when this fear is forever thrown bodily out of the human life where religious fear exists; . . "
"Might it not be that an immutable LAW underlies the whole scheme of creation? I have been contending that for years and years. And now I am being born out by the world's foremost scientists."
"Well, how can I find and use this Mighty Impulse . . .? All right, here is your answer - Just forget all about yourself and let it become second nature to you to realize your harmony with this cosmic law . . . As you progress in this Spiritual God-Realm, there will come to you the actual - what I might term - vibrations from this Realm, for it is a known fact that all natural things exist according to a certain ratio of vibrations."
"I think the evolutionary theory of life is far more wonderful than an instantaneous creation by the act of God can ever be. The creation has nothing to do with it but the fact that life does exist is the all important thing for us to think about now."
"We are products of Evolution. The secret of life is contained in life itself and the answer to the problems which perplex us so much today, lies quite close at hand if we could but grasp it."
"I will grant that all matter may be electronic in its origin. I will grant you further, that the atoms in a piece of steel may be chasing themselves around with the speed of an express train. To us matter is solid and we must recognize it as such. In other words, deal with things physical as they really are, they may be much different from what they seem to be now. I never like to go soaring off into the hazy realm of metaphysics, for while that metaphysical realm is the greatest realm in the world, at the same time, the problems of life for you and me are here and now and as such, we must deal with them."
"There is a spiritual law underlying what I am saying to you here, and the thought that your thoughts are being released into an ocean of electrical waves should certainly bring prayer down to a scientific basis in your life."
"The first thing we are bound to discover, if we do not know it already, is that we are very finite and small little bits of material energy in an awfully big Universe."
"It would not have been possible for this marvelous life instinct of life impulse to have come from the mass of fire or to have originated itself on a cooling planet. . . this life principle manifested on this earth at a certain period of its cooling process, and between a few degrees of temperature for life cannot exist except between the temperatures of 97 and 107 degrees, it came from outside."
"The universal nature of light is one of the keys to this puzzle. Light, according to tests with scientific instruments, is not merely what human eyes see, but essentially the same radiation as heat, x-rays, radio waves and all other form of radiation. Moreover, light is also energy. And solid matter is also a form of light when the word is used in its broader meaning of radiation."
"Getting down to the ultimate particles which form matter, which seem to constitute light and which carry energy, scientists find them all acting suspiciously like some of the processes of human thought."
"Tomorrow physics will undoubtedly divorce energy from matter and give it to space. I did that four years ago when I relegated all physical things directly in the great God-Realm from which they come. Soon physics will scientifically do this and the fact will be universally accepted. They will tell us that perhaps space is all there is; all energy, all intelligence, and all concept."
